What to Expect During a Bathroom Renovation (Start to Finish)

A bathroom renovation is one of the most rewarding home improvements you can make — but if you’ve never been through one, the process can feel uncertain. What happens first? How long will it take? Will your house be a construction zone for months?

Here’s a straightforward walkthrough of what the process looks like when you work with a design-build contractor in South Jersey.

Step 1: The Consultation

Everything starts with a conversation. We’ll meet at your home to look at the existing bathroom, talk about what you want to change, and understand how you use the space. Do you want a spa-like retreat with a walk-in shower? A double vanity for the primary suite? A simple refresh with updated tile and fixtures? This is where we listen before we suggest anything.

Step 2: Design and Material Selection

Once we understand your vision, we develop a design plan. This includes layout changes (if any), tile selections, vanity and cabinetry options, fixtures, lighting, and hardware. We’ll walk you through samples and options so nothing is a surprise. This phase typically takes one to two weeks depending on how quickly decisions come together.

Step 3: The Estimate

With the design locked in, we provide a detailed cost estimate that covers everything — demolition, plumbing, electrical, tile, fixtures, labor, and materials. No vague ranges. You’ll know what it costs and what’s included before any work begins.

Step 4: Demolition and Rough-In

This is where things get real. The old bathroom comes out — tile, vanity, fixtures, sometimes down to the studs. Once demo is complete, we handle any plumbing reconfiguration, electrical updates, and waterproofing. This behind-the-walls work is invisible in the finished product but absolutely critical to a bathroom that lasts.

Step 5: Tile Installation

Tile is where the bathroom starts coming to life — and it’s one of our specialties. Whether it’s large-format porcelain on the walls, mosaic on the shower floor, or a custom niche design, this is the craftsmanship that defines the finished space. Proper waterproofing, leveling, and layout are essential, especially with larger format tiles that leave no room for error.

Step 6: Fixtures, Vanity, and Finishing

With tile complete, we install the vanity, countertop, mirrors, lighting, hardware, glass enclosure, and accessories. This is the stage where everything comes together visually and the room starts to feel like a finished bathroom.

Step 7: The Final Reveal

We do a final walkthrough together. We’ll go through every detail, make sure everything meets your expectations, and handle any punch list items. The project isn’t done until you’re happy with the result.

How Long Does It Take?

Most bathroom renovations take two to four weeks of active construction, depending on the scope. A simple refresh with new tile and fixtures sits on the shorter end. A full primary suite renovation with layout changes and custom tile work takes longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline before work begins.
